The oceans of the earth are being over-fished at an
alarming rate. Unlike farm raised fish (catfish, crawfish, carp,
cod, tilapia, and salmon) the ocean fish cannot reproduce at a
fast enough rate to keep up with the hunting-and-gathering of human
consumption. The result is a fast decline in the populations of
large ocean fish. Today only around 10% of the fish stocks remain
from fifty years ago. Government reports state that 25% of ocean
fish stocks are being overexploited, and 52% are being fully
exploited. As a result of this overfishing we are losing species and
we risk a collapse of the entire ocean fish stocks. Current
estimates give us about 25 more years of fish stocks. The short-term
solution is simple and easy - don't buy or consume any ocean
caught seafood -. In the long term we need the following:
-
worldwide fisheries management program.
-
catch limits - scientifically determined
limits.
-
bycatch laws - prevent the unintentional
killing of ocean life.
-
protection of habitats' - spawning, nursing
grounds, corals.
-
monitoring and enforcement - strong monetary
enforcement.
-
remove government tax subsidies for ocean
fishing.
-
greater consumer awareness of the problem.
